WEIRTON - The Gilbert Lions' playoff hopes ended abruptly Friday, Nov. 13 with a 48-6 loss against Madonna High School in Class A playoff opener.

"We came out playing hard against a very good football team and played right with them for about a quarter and a half," said Gilbert Head Coach Gordon Carter. "It seems we shot ourselves in the foot afterwards with penalties and mistakes."

Josh Carter scored Gilbert's only touchdown in the first quarter of the game, tying it up at 6-6. That score was only 6 of 30 points the Madonna Blue Dons had allowed all season and the only score they've allowed in the first half of play.

"Madonna had a really great quarterback and he just took the game over after the first quarter," said Carter.

Though the Lions lost, Carter felt very proud of his team.

"We played hard to make the playoffs and with the schools combining, this is probably one of the last teams that could get the opportunity to be in the playoffs," Carter continued.

"It's something for our kids to remember and talk about as they become young men."

The Lions had 201 total yards with Josh Carter leading the way on 9 carries for 57 yards and one touchdown. Cameron Ellis carried the ball 18 times for 53 yards. Quarterback Ashton Cline completed three of his five passes for a total of 54 yards.

Madonna came into the game on the heels of an undefeated season and will play Tucker County in the quarterfinal round of the Class A playoffs.
