GILBERT - The Lions defeated the Matewan Tigers Thursday, 60-40 with Gilbert’s long stretch of six games in seven nights coming to an end.

“I’m glad this stretch of games is over,” said Gilbert Head Coach Walt Cline. “We came out of it with 4 wins and 2 losses. Everyone is exhausted and I’m giving the guys a couple days off to rest physically and mentally, before we get back to work on Monday.”

Cline seemed pleased with his team’s efforts, commenting that the Lions are “playing team basketball” and are continuing to improve.

“It should be an interesting sectional tournament, as closely matched as the county teams are this year,” Cline continued regarding the upcoming sectionals. “No one has shown that they are the dominant team yet. All the teams play different opponents and some of the teams have harder schedules than others, so you can throw the records out of the window when county teams play each other”

“I believe any county team is capable of beating the other on any given night and it won’t be considered an upset. You can disregard the scores of the previous meeting between any of the teams,” said Cline. “When we play each other, they are rivalry games and the games will be decided by who wants it the most. I just hope my guys continue to play as a team, work hard and improve.”

Ryan Altizer scored the game high of 19 points for the Lions. Other Gilbert scorers were: Cody Houck scored 12 points, Chris Carter had 6 points, Josh Carter scored 5, Kyle Smith 4 points, Ashton and Sam Cline each had 3 points, and Joe Tilley and Cody St. Clair had 2 points each.

Scoring for Matewan was Chaz Clusky had 10 points, Nathaniel Mitchell had 8 points, Cody Centers scored 7 points, Thomas Simpkins netted 6 points, Micah Mahon had 4 points, Corey Daniels and John Bailey scored 2 points, and Corey Lester had 1 point.

Matewan looks to take on Phelps in an away game Monday, Jan. 25.

Gilbert will take their 4-5 record to Westside Jan. 26 and Williamson Jan. 29.
