The Tigers grabbed the lead early into the game, ending the first half with a 16 point lead over the Bulldogs, 34-18 and Van couldn’t recover through the remaining half.
“We are improving and we hope to make some noise before it’s all over,” said Tigers Head Coach Phillip Mitchell. “We played well in spurts, but we still have to work on turnovers and fouls.”
The Tigers’ Micah Mahon scored the game high of 23 points, Chaz Clusky scored 14 points, Nathaniel Mitchell and John Bailey each scored 8 points, Cory Daniels netted 4 points, and Grant Charles scored 1.
Mitchell grabbed 8 rebounds for the Tigers.
Scoring for Van was: Travis Rose leading the Bulldogs with 12 points, Donnie Markins and Alex Adkins scored 8 points apiece, Matt White scored 5 points and Chris Sanders and Tyler Gunnoe each had 2.
The Matewan Tigers will be playing the Belfry Pirates in an away game Friday, Jan. 29 at 8 p.m.
