Mingo County candidates file for election

Fifty-nine persons have filed as candidates for various offices in connection with the May 11 Primary Election in Mingo County, the County Court Clerk’s office confirmed.

Chief Field Deputy Bridgett Puckett reminded candidates that they are to report to the county clerk’s offices at 9 a.m. on Feb. 23 for the drawing of names for ballot positions.

Puckett said she would not announce filings for other district, state and national offices until the Secretary of State certifies the list of candidates.

The latest filers include 53 Democrats and one Republican.

Five candidates, including two incumbents, have filed for three seats that will become vacant on the Mingo County Board of Education by the end of the current fiscal year, June 30. Voters will elect three in the non-partisan election for the board.

Çharles Stanford “Butch” West, Williamson attorney and present member and president of the Board of Education, filed for reelection along with another incumbent, Hie (Mike) Carter Jr. of Route 2, Delbarton.

Other candidates for the board posts include William Eddie Justus of Meador; Lyle Marcum of Matewan, and Stephen Ellis Marcum of Route 1, Kermit.

Jimmy A.“Big Jim” Hatfield (Democrat) of Gilbert is seeking nomination and reelection to the office of Mingo County Court Clerk, and also seeks a Democrat committeeman’s seat in Stafford District.

Two other candidates are vying for nomination as county court clerk in the May primary. They are Shelia Kessler, current mayor of Matewan, and Curtis Clyde Lester (D) of Baisden.

Mingo County Circuit Court Clerk Orland Grant Preece (D) of Williamson is seeking nomination and reelection to the clerk’s position. He currently has no opposition in connection with the May primary.

Mingo County Sheriff Lonnie Hannah of Williamson filed as a Democratic candidate for a seat on the Mingo County Commission. Incumbent member and president of the Commission, John Mark Hubbard, also has filed for nomination and reelection. A third candidate is Democrat Robert Michael Brewer of Williamson.

Each political party, Democrat or Republican, will elect a committeewoman and a committeeman to represent their respective districts (there are seven) on the county executive committees.

(For committeeman): Freddie Newsome (D), Williamson; Michael G. Brewer (D), Williamson.

Lee District:

(For committeewoman): Jearlene Maynard, (D) of Delbarton; Josie A. Sheppard, (D) of Delbarton; Beulah Vance, (R) of Route 1, Delbarton; Maxine E. Colegrove, (D) Route 1, Delbarton

(For committeeman): Lee Goff, (D) of Delbarton; Ken Maynard (D) of Delbarton; Elmer R. Spence, (D) of Delbarton; Dallas Lee “Big Dal” Toler, (D) of Rural Route 2, Delbarton; John Henry Maynard (D) Route1, Delbarton; John Paul Vance (D), Route 1, Delbarton.

Tug-Hardee District:

(For committeewoman): Lisa F. Kirk, (D) of Lenore, W.Va.; Judy A. Harvey, (D) Chattaroy, W.Va.; Brenda Evans (D), Lenore, W.Va.

(For committeeman): Jerome Marcum (D), Williamson; Dewey Chafin (D), Lenore, W.Va.;

Stafford District:

Kermit-Harvey District:

(For committeewoman): Anna Mae Sartin Wellman (D), Kermit; Martha Lynn Maynard (D), Route 1, Kermit.

(For committeeman): Phillip “Box” Wellman (D), Dingess; Ernest “Big Ern” Williams (D), Route 1, Kermit; James Evans (D) Route 1, Marrowbone. Kermit; Charles “Bucky” Meade (D) Breeden.

Filing for the office of Conservation District supervisor was Wilma Lee Steele, Democrat, of Meador.

Justin Jerome Marcum, Democrat of Nolan and Williamson, is a candidate for the 20th Delegate District Executive Committee. Evette Mapes (D) of Varney is a candidate for the 21st Delegate District Executive Committee.

Jason Ryan Varney (D) of Matewan seeks election to the Mingo County Congressional District Executive Committee. Democrats Claude C. Sammons of Red Jacket and Larry William Croaff of Edgarton are candidates for the 6th Senatorial Executive Committee.
