Key offensive rebounding and putbacks by Nathaniel Mitchell and a late game-winning shot by Corey Lester lifted the Tigers to the win.
With the game tied at 36 to start the fourth quarter, Burch took a 38-36 leadearly in the period when Ryan Hatfield hit a shot from the baseline, but
Matewan's Chaz Clusky hit a similar shot on the opposite end to knot the game at 38. Matewan's Micah Mahon hit a putback that gave the Tigers a 40-38 lead less than a minute later, but Burch's Keith Hill answered with a 3-pointer that gave the Bulldogs a 41-40 lead with 6:02 left in the game.
Following a tie-up, the alternating possession went to Matewan and Thomas
Simpkins hit a short jumper from near the bucket to give the Tigers a 42-41lead with 3:58 left.
Hatfield reclaimed the lead for the Dogs with a back-door bucket at the 2:34 mark that made it 43-42, but Matewan's Lester capitalized on a Burch turnover and took the ball the full length of the court and pulled up for a jumper that gave the Tigers the lead for good at 44-43 with 1:39 remaining in the game.
From there, the Bulldogs were forced to foul and send the Tigers to the free-throw line.
Mahon was fouled by Troy Starr with 1:16 left in the game and missed the front end of the bonus, but Mitchell leapt high into the air and snatched the rebound from Burch.
With 51.6 seconds left, Jacob Stratton fouled Matewan's John Bailey, who missed the front end of the bonus. But, Mitchell was right there again to get the rebound off the missed free throw and went untouched and undefended to the basket to score a layin. With 48.3 left, Matewan led 46-43.
Starr got a steal for the Bulldogs and gave it to Dave Hatfield, who scored from under the basket to make it 46-45 and Ryan Hatfield put up a shot with 0.6 seconds remaining, but the shot was off its mark as the buzzer sounded.
"We definitely controlled the boards," Matewan Coach Phillip Mitchell said. "We got some great offensive rebounding by Micah Mahon and Nathaniel. They both played strong underneath the basket. Nathaniel made that big offensive reboundthere at the end and turned around and stuck it in the hole. This is a good win for us. I've said all along that we're a work in progress. This shows that anybody in our section can beat anybody else on any given night."
With the win, Matewan improves to 3-14.
Matewan led Burch 16-12 in the first quarter, but were outscored 17-9 in the second period as the Bulldogs took a 29-25 lead into the locker room athalftime.
Matewan then outscored Burch 11-7 in the third quarter to tie the game and then topped the Dogs 10-9 in the final stanza for the victory.
The Tigers were led by Mahon with 14 points. Next was Lester with nine, Clusky and Bailey with seven apiece, Nathaniel Mitchell with four, Cory Daniels withthree and Simpkins with two.
Nathaniel Mitchell led the Tigers on the boards with 10 rebounds.
Matewan made 18 field goals, including four 3s and sank only 6-of-18 foulshots.
Burch was led by Starr with 20, including nine from a trio of 3-pointers. He also grabbed three rebounds and a steal and gave two assists.
"Troy did an excellent job," Burch Assistant Coach David Hanshaw said. "Matewan played a good ballgame and them pounding the boards was the difference in the ballgame."
Ryan Hatfield scored 10 points, grabbed seven rebounds, gave four assists and blocked a shot. Dave Hatfield netted eight points, grabbed three rebounds and gave an assist. Hill poured in seven points, grabbed three rebounds and gave two assists. Stratton yanked down five rebounds, gave two assists and got a steal. Zac Runyon got two rebounds and two steals and gave two assists.
Burch was playing without starting point guard Corey Cook, and Cody Williamson and Gabriel Vinson, who both come off the bench for the Bulldogs.
"We were playing without our starting point guard and that didn't help us any,"
Hanshaw said. "It forces you to change things. But, give Matewan credit. They played well."
The Bulldogs fall to 9-7 with the loss.
Burch made 16 field goals, including five 3s. From the foul line, they made 8-of-13 free throws.
